A Mid-December Emotional Check-In…

How are you doing? Really? Not the superficial answer you give to casual acquaintances or the quick retort you fire off before changing the topic, but the real, authentic answer… the deepest, most true response.

Does it sound anything like:

“I’m ok…well, hold on…that’s not entirely true… I’m tired, and I’m excited. My heart is full of joy in so many moments, and filled with overwhelm in others…”

Or maybe:

“I’m struggling with some relationships right now, and feeling a bit sad and lonely…”

Or:

“The addiction/disorder is really taking ahold of me again, and I’m scared.”

“I’m feeling really fulfilled and excited about the new year, and all of its possibilities.”

“My plate is full right now, but I’m really enjoying all of the festivities. I just need to prioritize self-care after the holidays to recharge.”

“I’m feeling some depression kick in right about now, but I’m doing all that I can to manage it.”

What’s the truest answer for you? Whatever it is, do yourself a favor and honor the response. First, validate for yourself what you’re feeling and experiencing right now. Then, ask yourself what you’re needing in this season.

  • Do you need a return to the “basics”? (food that nourishes you, restorative sleep, proper hydration, movement that energizes, etc.)

  • Are you needing one of the various forms of rest? (a pause from your schedule, alone time, digital detox, time in nature, etc.)

  • Do you need connection? (with yourself, others, or a higher power)

  • Do you need some form of healing? (physically- to slow down and recuperate, or emotionally- to address old wounds, let go and release/forgive, to establish new narratives or boundaries, etc.)

  • Do you need help/support? (treatment, therapy, a sponsor, a support network of likeminded people, or help with childcare/responsibilities)

  • Do you need to feel a sense of joy, purpose or “aliveness”? (a connection to activities, causes, or people that contribute to a sense of contentment or fulfillment)

Checking in with ourselves doesn’t always come naturally, especially this time of year. We get caught up in busy schedules and completely ignore the messages from our bodies and minds. I know from experience, trust me. But if these words have somehow found you, please take a pause, turn inward, and listen to the answer that emerges. I find that when I do this fairly regularly during the month of December, amidst the chaos of the holidays, my body/mind thanks me come January.

Wishing everyone the very happiest of holidays! I hope you’re able to rest, have fun, reflect, laugh, and take good care of yourself. I’m here cheering you along every step of the way.
